The Shipikisha Club

Almost every marriage in Zambia starts with premarital counselling sessions to help plan how to resolve the issues that will arise during their marriage. As the couple get closer to the wedding day, counsellors, friends, or family might mention “Shipikisha Club” and sometimes this advice is given to the women only.

Shipikisha Club can be described as facing a lot of challenges in marriage and enduring them regardless of what they are. It is a traditional view of marriage that has been passed on from generation to generation.

Should marriage be a “Shipikisha Club”? Do we have to endure no matter how bad the situation gets? What comes to your mind when you hear the phrase?

Does the “Shipikisha Club” have limits? For example, physical and emotional abuse. Should you stay and work things out? When he or she cheats, should you stay and work things out? When your relationship becomes toxic, should one stay and work it out?

It is obvious couples should not marry believing that everything will be rosy forever. Marital challenges include long-term illness, lack of finances, loss of job, to mention a few. In such instances, it is okay to stay and work things out together.

In a way, the Shipikisha club is meant to convey the seriousness of marriage. Why then does it seem that this is emphasized more to women than men? Shouldn’t men also shipikisha?

Marriage is about love, sacrifice, and commitment between two people and not endurance of things that are harmful to your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Couples should experience joy as they choose to be together forever.

The 411 on Resizing

What is ring resizing?

Ring resizing is the process of making a ring smaller or bigger to fit your ring finger and it can be done on most metals.

The need to resize your ring may arise due to weight loss or weight gain and sometimes it’s done simply because of wanting to wear it on another finger.

“The ring resizing process can be completed in as little as a few hours, or it can take several weeks (or anything in between). It all depends on the metal, the intricacy of the ring, and the jeweler you are working with.” Honey Co

Ring Resizing And What You Need To Know — Enji Studio Jewelry

What Metals can be resized?

  • Platinum
  • Gold
  • Sterling Silver

Platinum

Platinum is a precious silvery white metal that has very recently become a popular choice for all types of jewelry. It’s extremely durable and will last forever. Platinum is also one of the most expensive metals because of its rarity and density.

Gold

Gold rings are not always 100% pure because pure gold is too soft to shape into complex designs. It is often mixed with alloy metals to strengthen it.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% of silver and 7.5% of other metals, usually  copper.

Effects of Ring Resizing

When a ring is resized, the place where it was cut and then soldered (a joining process used to join different types of metals together by melting a metal alloy) becomes weak. It doesn’t help that these cuts are made from the bottom part of the ring, which is usually subject to the most stress.

And if you exert pressure on the place where the ring is soldered it can bend or break, however, if the resizing is done well the risk is minimized.

In some cases, when the jeweler has not soldered the ring back together with care when resizing, the joint will be more likely to break in the future.

We do not currently offer the resizing service, however we do have ring adjusters in-store to help adjust the size of a bigger ring. Please ask us and we’ll be happy to send you one. They are K230 inclusive of delivery.

Your Guide To Metal Sensitivity

Metal sensitivity is considered a disorder of the immune system where the skin is irritated by metals like jewellery,. It is a common condition that affects 10% to 15% of the population. It can produce a variety of symptoms, including rashes, swelling, or pain due to contact with certain metals (MedBroadcast.com).

The most common metal people are allergic to is nickel. Nickel is a natural hard, silvery-white metal, and it is often mixed with other metals.  Contact with jewellery containing nickel causes an itchy rash and possibly blisters at the site of contact. The skin reacts when it has been exposed for a period of 24 hours or more, especially with rings.

Nickel

What metals are safe if you have sensitive skin?

1.Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper.  Pure sterling silver is too soft to mold into complex jewellery designs. Sterling silver is an affordable precious metal, it is durable and is usually 100% hypoallergenic metal. In some instances, nickel can be one of the components in sterling silver so when making a purchase ensure to ask if the item is nickel free. All our sterling silver rings are nickel free.

2.Tungsten Carbide Rings

If you have any metal allergies, be assured it won’t happen with tungsten as long as it’s nickel free.  It will never bend and is perfect for those who love heavy metals. Tungsten is also scratch resistant and requires little maintenance. It’s only downside is revealed when it sustains a fall from a height, it could crack or break due to its hardness. Most couples choose tungsten bands to symbolize the strength of  their love and commitment.

3.Gold

Gold is one of the oldest, most adored metals that has been known to symbolise wealth. In its pure form, it is a bright, slightly reddish yellow, dense, and soft. It has three alloys: yellow, white and rose gold and is measured in karats. Karat is the measure of the purity of gold. Top Tips:

  1. Avoid strong beauty care products, they may react with the metal and cause a skin reaction. Use gentle products like handmade natural soaps. For example: https://www.facebook.com/baobabswirls/
  2. Avoid plated rings.
  3. Use the right products to clean your rings and have your ring  cleaned professionally at least twice a year. Eternal Jewellery offers 2 FREE polishes in a year under the warranty and to benefit from this service the receipt must be presented.

NOTE: A rash caused by a nickel allergy can be treated with antihistamines. There is no cure for an allergy to metals. The best way to prevent a reaction is to avoid the allergen.

We hope you found this article helpful, it’s important to note that a metal allergy can develop unexpectedly. If you suspect you may have a metal allergy, when making a jewellery purchase always ask if the jewellery is nickel free and ask for further advice on your choices.

6 Secrets to a Successful Surprise Proposal

In order to pull off a successful surprise proposal, you first need to find out her ring size.

Here are some tips:

1. If your girlfriend regularly wears rings on her ring finger, see if you can sneak in to her jewellery box and pinch one to take to the jewellers to get it sized.

2. Get a piece of paper and when she isn’t home trace round the inside of her ring so the jeweller can get an idea of her size.

3. Ask your friends or family to do a bit of digging, or find out your girlfriends ring size for you.

4. Treat her to a day out with friends and make sure they take her to a jewellery store to browse and eventually find out her ring size and let you know discreetly.

5. Buy a ring sizer and when your partner is fast asleep gently measure her ring finger, if she is a light sleeper this might not be the best option for you but if she sleeps like a log you should be able to take her size without her ever knowing!

6. Sometimes it’s hard to find out her ring size, she may catch on to what you are up to and ruin the surprise! So, if all else fails there is always one important rule to follow – go bigger. It’s easier for a jeweller to make a ring smaller than to make it bigger, there is more material for them to work with so when guessing a size it’s always playing it safe to get the next size up rather than one down.

7. You’ll also need to plan the proposal, if you want an elaborate proposal and need help we provide a Decor Proposal Service inclusive of Photography – for more information 0974583423

The 7 Myths of Wedding Planning

Wedding planning is surrounded by a number of myths and like a lot of myths, some have their roots in old truths whilst some have come about more recently due to societal changes.

Myth 1: It takes at least 12 months to plan a wedding

With the right budget, organized and focused mind, you can plan a wedding within 3 months. If you put your energy and mind to it, why not? You can still have the wedding of your dreams. Although this could give rise to questions like how long the couple have known each other and have been engaged.

Myth 2: Everything about your wedding should be personal and unique

Not everything at your wedding has to be creative or different to create a great day because experience and memories ultimately don’t come from personal touches or creative details, they come from you. Additionally, excellent planning, execution and the right vendors will ensure your wedding is beautiful and enjoyable.

Myth 3: Unless you wear a white dress and cut a wedding cake it’s not really a wedding!

This is probably one of the oldest myths that you’ll be hearing from your parents, older family members or even some friends when you excitedly tell them your plans. Society’s view is that unless you have a wedding cake and wear a white wedding dress, it is not really a wedding.

Times have changed, weddings have evolved, you can create your own wedding style and remove elements that do not have any meaning for you or that work best with your budget.

Myth 4: You have to wear the same rings for your entire marriage

Choosing the perfect rings can seem like a tough and stressful process, especially when there is so much variety at great prices. Not to worry, if you choose something and feel you could also have chosen another design, no fear you can come back for the other design on your next anniversary. All in all, you are not limited to wearing the same ring for the rest of your marriage.

Myth 5: Seeing each other before the ceremony is bad luck

Many people believe that it is bad luck to see each other before the wedding on the wedding day. The reality is marriage takes work and mutual effort; it is not dependent on luck. If you want to see each other before the ceremony, consider a creative and special reveal.

Myth 6: The Bride should be overly reserved at the wedding

Your wedding is something that you are likely to experience once in a lifetime. Get out of your shell and enjoy your wedding, it is yours after all. Of course, we are not advocating disrespect and unpleasantries, do what works best for you, your partner and families.

Myth 7: There are people that you have to invite/include

When you start writing your guest list, it’s easy to start adding everyone you know. Once you start making that list you might become overwhelmed especially if you are working on a smaller budget. Ideally it is your wedding and you have to invite the people you are comfortable to be with at your wedding, you can use the below tool to help you navigate the guest list.

The Complete Guide to Making Your Guest List:

The Most Common Mistakes People Make When Buying Rings

1. They don’t discuss their preferences

  • Couples often don’t discuss their partner’s preferred stone or design
  • Purchase what your partner would like to avoid tension and requesting an exchange past the policy time because of being unhappy with the choice.
  • Discuss what you would like and exchange pictures, decide on top four designs so that it’s much easier to make a satisfying purchase

2. They guess sizes

  • Buying rings is like buying a dress or shoes, you need to know the right size prior to making a purchase
  • The only way to know your accurate ring size is by visiting a jewelry store or using a ring sizer service like the one Eternal Jewellery provide where we send you a sizer to check your size.
  • When you know your ring size, you are assured your purchase will be smooth and quick
  • If you would like to plan a surprise engagement do your best to find out the ring size to avoid disappointment

3. They don’t take time to ensure they are buying the right size

  • When buying your rings in store, make sure you are 100% happy with the fit
  • It’s not possible to be sure of the size instore then a few hours later say it’s not the right size
  • If you are making a purchase instore you have the advantage of trying the ring on, make sure it fits right before you leave.
  • Avoid insisting on being your preferred designs available size and demand an exchange when it doesn’t fit

4. They disregard company policy

  • All companies have policies that both consumers and staff need to respect.
  • The customer has the right to a satisfactory service as much as the staff have to ensure they follow company policy.
  • To avoid dissatisfaction, listen to staff when they advise the policies and also check your receipts for the policies and adhere to them.
  • This will save you a lot of dissatisfaction, for example you’ll know how long you have to exchange a product and do it within the specified time.

5. Lose receipts immediately after purchase

  • Keep your receipts safe
  • To make use of services like exchange or warranty you need to produce a receipt.
  • Most companies have that policy and it applies when buying rings too

The 5 Reasons Why Wedding Rings are Important

Thousands of years ago in Egypt, the ritual of putting a ring on every bride’s finger was considered a symbol of eternity and love between the couple. Today, various cultures across the world still hold the same belief and both men and women now wear them. Married or intend to marry?

Here are some important reasons for wearing a wedding ring:

  1. Symbol of respect and commitment to your spouse
  • Couples exchange wedding rings as a symbol of commitment to their marriage.
  1. Status Symbol
  • It sets you apart from people who have not made a commitment to a loved one.
  1. Symbol of attachment
  • Wearing a wedding ring is also a symbol of attachment. It is believed that once you wear the rings on your ring finger, you both are connected by hearts and no one can split you into half until eternity.
  1. Your ring is a first line of defence against infidelity
  • Whether or not you’re wearing a ring is one of the things people notice when they meet you and they’ll often make assumptions about your availability and your commitment to your marriage based on the ring’s presence or absence.
  1. Your ring is a visible symbol to your children and the people you serve that your marriage matters
  • People may look at how you wear your rings and make inferences about your personality, relationship status, and other factors. For instance, maintaining the image of a perfect presidential marriage is paramount in most countries, hence the president and first lady should probably wear their wedding rings in public.
  • Within the Zambian context, President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and the first lady Esther Lungu are usually photographed wearing their rings. And if on any occasion their rings are absent on their fourth fingers there are usually speculations as to whether their relationship is stable or not, this is a confirmation that rings can be a pleasant way to indicate the stability of your relationship, however it does not mean that those who never take off their rings have a stable relationship.

At Eternal Jewellery, we believe in an eternal kind of love and a ring as one of the signs of that love. If for some reason your ring is absent because it is lost, has become too tight or loose we’ve got you covered with our offer of exquisite designs and unbeatable after sale services.

Nevertheless, the world is bordered across different cultures and ideologies and there is always that option of not wearing a ring at all.
